Weltschmerz / Yair Barak on "To all that had been destroyed" by Roni Ben Porat.

In Western culture's history, Lacrimosa is both the figure of the weeping Mary and a church hymn, part of the Requiem. She resides in the foundation of Roni Ben Porat works, shown here, and hovers above them like a guardian. The small pietta, almost invisible in the exhibition, is the key to deciphering the enigma in the gallery.

The show's beautiful name – "To all that had been destroyed" – echoes the blessing uttered during a toast. It is a general, universal reference to all that had once been something or someone, now gone. It accepts the historical dialectic that includes life and death, building and destroying, growth and decay. In Ireland, they drink whiskey and toast: "to all who should have been with us." This is the embodiment of death as a commandment for the sake of life.
