“At the center of Roni Ben Porat’s work is the realm of the unseen. The work was inspired by the experience of losing one’s sight as described in Saramago’s book Blindness. Contrary to the perception of blindness as a “black cover,” the book’s protagonists experience a flood of whiteness that swallows every visible thing, even life itself. Ben Porat created an installation consisting of bound pairs of pages, reminiscent of double spreads in an album, on which paired words from the book appear as ghostly riddles. In the center of the space are white reliefs – a visual expression of the experience of blindness. The installation entices a search of what can no longer be seen and what might never have been possible to see.”
